Afrata Beach is a picturesque location nestled in the Rodopos region, approximately 28 kilometers west of the city of Chania. It is situated just one kilometer away from the village of Afrata, and is reached via a narrow asphalt road that passes through a scenic gorge filled with aromatic plants. Along this route, travelers can also spot the historic Panagia Odigitria (Gonia) Monastery and the well-known Ellinospilios cave.
The beach itself is a small rocky bay with a pebbled stretch of shore. It is protected from the winds, which contributes to the calm and clear turquoise waters that are often likened to a crystal clear swimming pool. The water clarity is exceptional, with visibility extending up to a depth of five meters, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling and diving. However, the waters can turn murky during big waves, even in the absence of strong winds. Given the rocky terrain both on the beach and in the water, visitors are recommended to wear water shoes.
Afrata Beach is not typically crowded, making it a peaceful haven for relaxation. It is a popular choice among locals for swimming and is known for its lively atmosphere, particularly among swimming enthusiasts. Despite its relatively small size, the beach offers several amenities for visitors. There are free seats and umbrellas available, although these are limited in number due to the beach's size. It is advisable to arrive before 11 am during the peak season in August to secure these amenities.
For visitors' convenience, there is a small kiosk located on the coast where necessary items can be purchased. Additionally, the beach offers toilets and showers with warm water, enhancing the comfort of the visitors. There is also a taverna located on the beach where visitors can enjoy typical Greek food.
The beach is surrounded by a green landscape filled with tamarisk trees, which not only provide shade but also contribute to the paradise-like atmosphere of the beach. Free parking is available for visitors, with the upper car park never reaching full capacity, even during peak periods. This car park also offers a splendid view of the bay, and visitors can place spare beds under the trees here for extra shade and comfort. Despite the steep curves on the downhill road leading to Afrata Beach, the journey is described as enjoyable, adding to the overall charm of this secluded beach.
