Playa Coral is a secluded beach situated in the heart of Puerto Escondido, a town in Oaxaca, Mexico. It is renowned for its picturesque beauty, making it one of the best beaches in Puerto Escondido. This beach is characterized by its large stones, frequently moved by the waves, creating a unique and intriguing natural phenomenon. However, these stones can potentially pose a risk to beachgoers. Despite the rocky terrain, the beach offers a beautiful view and is perfect for experienced swimmers who can handle the strong undertow and big waves.
The beach can be accessed through three different paths. The first and simplest is by paying a toll at Hotel Villa Mexicana. Another option is walking from Playa Bacocho, a journey that takes approximately 10-15 minutes, but it is only feasible when the tide is low due to the slippery rock formations. The third route is a more adventurous one, involving a 30-minute walk and some rock hopping around the headland from Mirador Las Tortugas.
Playa Coral is not a typical social beach and is not suitable for surfing. Instead, it offers a serene and secluded atmosphere, ideal for couples seeking privacy and relaxation. It is a wonderful spot for sunset viewing and snorkeling, with colorful fish around the headlands.
Regarding amenities, there is a bathroom facility near the beach. However, its condition is not ideal. As for accommodations, there are two main options near Playa Coral: La Coral and Hotel Villa Mexicana. La Coral, once a popular resort that was abandoned due to rising tides, now offers short-term overnight stays and longer monthly rentals. Hotel Villa Mexicana, on the other hand, requires a fee to access the beach.
