One of the beach's notable features is the "corrales de pesca" or fishing corrals, which are human-made structures near the shore that have become a part of the city's tradition and history.

The beach is named after La Cruz del Mar, a monument located on the promenade, which is dedicated to the actions of the inhabitants during the invasion after the Lisbon earthquake. This cross, located at the intersection of Isaac Peral Street and Banda de la Playa, has undergone multiple reconstructions and renovations since its inception in the 19th century.
Despite the popular belief that the cross's origin is related to the Lisbon earthquake and tsunami in 1755, historical documentation and a painting in the Ermita del Cristo de las Misericordias suggest that the cross existed before that event. Nevertheless, an annual procession from the church square to Cruz del Mar is conducted, carrying the image of Christ in a plea for intercession.
Access to Playa Cruz del Mar is convenient, with multiple options available. Visitors can arrive by ship, on foot, or by car. However, it's important to note that swimming may not be possible when the tide goes out.
