Playa del Cardon is a serene beach located in the southern part of Gran Canaria island, within the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. This pebble beach is recognized for its distinctive natural features and tranquil ambiance, largely due to the alluvial deposits of the Fandelta de Tirajana which have been reworked by the waves over time. The sound of the stones being moved by the waves is a unique characteristic that adds to the peaceful atmosphere of the beach.
The beach is situated in a protected area known as ZEC and is also part of the Juncalillo del Sur C-32 Site of Scientific Interest. It is surrounded by mountains, offering visitors a picturesque view of the landscape. Additionally, the beach has a historical significance with a machine gun nest from the Second World War at one end, which has been repurposed by fishermen. An old salt warehouse is also located nearby, providing an opportunity for visitors to learn about the area's history.
Despite its easy accessibility via an asphalt road that connects with Juan Grande, the beach is not typically crowded. It generally has a low occupancy rate, even during peak season, likely due to its isolated location and lack of signage. A large dirt parking lot is available for visitors, although caution is advised for those driving campervans and motorhomes.
Visitors to Playa del Cardon can take advantage of rock shelters on the beach to store their belongings and towels while sunbathing and resting. However, due to the stony terrain, it is recommended that visitors bring appropriate footwear for walking and entering the water. The area is usually windy and highly sunny, so it is advisable for visitors to stay hydrated and ensure they have adequate sun protection. To maintain the cleanliness and natural beauty of the beach, visitors are encouraged not to leave waste and lighting fires is strictly prohibited.
