Playa del Castillo, also known as Caleta de Fuste, is a picturesque, family-friendly beach situated within the municipality of Antigua. The beach is renowned for its golden sand, horseshoe shape, and clear, calm waters, all of which contribute to its unique charm. Spanning approximately 800 meters in length and 40 meters in width, it is a popular destination for both adults and families seeking a relaxing environment.
The beach's natural features are a significant draw for visitors. Its orientation is predominantly south-facing, providing stunning coastal views both during the day and at night. Despite its man-made origins, Playa del Castillo offers an authentic ocean experience. The beach's shallow waters are particularly safe for children and non-swimmers, and there is very little wave activity due to the sheltered nature of the bay. The beach is protected from strong waves by the Caleta de Fuste marina and a rocky promontory to the south.
Playa del Castillo is well-equipped with amenities to enhance the visitor experience. The beach features a seaside promenade and a wooden platform providing access for disabled individuals. For those with mobility issues or families with pushchairs, there is a designated access area. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available for rent, and clean toilets and recycling areas are provided for convenience. The beach has a designated area for beach sports, such as beach soccer and volleyball, and swings for children.
Adjacent to the beach, near the marina, visitors can explore the Castillo de San Buenaventura, an 18th-century military fortress built to defend the island from pirate attacks. A variety of restaurants offering both national and international cuisine are located nearby. Moreover, visitors can engage in unique activities, such as swimming with sea lions, at the nearby Puerto del Castillo.
Despite its popularity, Playa del Castillo is not typically crowded, especially in the early morning hours, making it ideal for peaceful walks or photography. However, it should be noted that the beach is a bit of a walk from the parking area. A couple of kilometers away from Playa del Castillo, there are two 18-hole golf courses and the Atlántico Shopping Center, a popular destination featuring cinemas.
