Playa del Lagarto is a small cove in the northwest region of the Gáldar municipality. This secluded beach, nestled adjacent to the Botija Archaeological Site and the New Wind Farm, is known for its clear waters and pebbly shore, making it a popular spot for diving, snorkeling, and fishing. However, due to the moderate to strong swell that occurs throughout the year, visitors are advised to be cautious, especially if they are not familiar with the area.
The beach's location, coupled with its limited accessibility, ensures that it remains relatively uncrowded despite its popularity among locals and tourists alike. It can be reached via a 15-minute walk from the nearest road, or by using a 4x4 vehicle. The beach is accessible from the GC-2 highway by taking the El Cardonal exit, and then following a dirt road.
The surrounding area of Playa del Lagarto has a rich agricultural history, with lands that were previously used for the cultivation of tomatoes, onions, and potatoes. Currently, the nearby farms are dedicated to banana cultivation and livestock farming, including goats, cows, chickens, and pigs.
In addition to the beach itself, the nearby Botija Archaeological Site, which is located in the upper part of the beach, offers a unique opportunity for exploration. However, visitors should be aware that the site is not signposted.
Despite the natural beauty and attractions of Playa del Lagarto, the beach lacks certain amenities. There are no lifeguard services or toilet facilities available for visitors. Additionally, there is no mention of any parking facilities, implying that visitors may need to make their own arrangements for parking.
