Spiaggia di Polyrizos is a picturesque sandy beach nestled on the southern coast of Crete, within the Rethymno prefecture, close to the Korakas settlement. The beach's natural beauty is enhanced by the surrounding olive groves that gracefully descend towards the sea, the clear, shallow waters, and the rocky cliffs and caves that mark the landscape.
The beach is semi-organized, offering amenities such as sunbeds and umbrellas to visitors. However, visitors should be aware that the southern location of the beach makes it prone to southern winds, which can cause sand to blow around. Despite this, the beach is known for its tranquility, remaining relatively quiet even during the peak summer months. This makes it an attractive destination for those seeking to avoid crowded places and enjoy a serene beach experience amidst lush vegetation and peaceful sandy bays.
Spiaggia di Polyrizos is also known for its good road access, sitting conveniently below an asphalt road. Parking is available, although it can become limited during peak times. The beach is a popular spot for snorkeling, particularly towards the western end through the rocks, and it is also suitable for families with children and non-swimmers due to the shallow depth of the sea.
The beach is located near the villages of Kato and Ano Rodakino, which are surrounded by the mountain peak of Krioneritis and the long Korakas beach. The area is also known for the European long-distance hiking trail E4, which starts in Kato Rodakino and heads north towards the village of Aloni.
The town of Frangokastello, located 8 km to the west, offers additional dining options in the form of seaside taverns, where visitors can enjoy the view of the Libyan Sea, the golden sand, and the Venetian fortress. To reach Spiaggia di Polyrizos from Rethymno, visitors can take a scenic drive passing through the charming village of Argiroupoli and its water springs or through the village of Armeni, known for its archaeological sites. The journey takes approximately an hour and a half.
