Playa El Cuyo is a tranquil beach situated in the small fishing village of El Cuyo, located on the YucatĂĄn Peninsula in Mexico. The village, which used to function as a timber port, is nestled in the RĂa Lagartos Reserve, between Holbox and Las Coloradas. The beach and its surrounding area are widely recognized for their stunning natural landscapes, which include mangroves, a turquoise blue sea, and petrified tropical forests. El Cuyo is also home to a variety of wildlife, including flamingos, turtles, and various bird species that migrate to the peninsula annually.
The beach itself is known for its clean and expansive space, providing an ideal setting for long walks and activities such as kitesurfing, paddleboarding, and fishing. However, due to the presence of strong currents, it may not always be suitable for family swimming. The beach is not typically crowded, offering visitors a peaceful and authentic experience. This lack of overtourism has helped maintain the beach's natural beauty and unspoiled condition.
The village of El Cuyo is home to around two thousand inhabitants, who have succeeded in preserving the authenticity and privacy of the area. The majority of the village's wooden houses, built over 40 years ago, remain unchanged. There are no large hotels or residential complexes, adding to the village's charm. Instead, visitors will find small businesses offering basic supplies and around 15 dining establishments providing a variety of food options, including organic coffee, pizza, seafood dishes, fresh drinks, and traditional Yucatecan or Mexican cuisine. Accommodations primarily consist of cabins equipped with amenities such as hammocks, beds, private bathrooms, mosquito nets, and some with terraces.
To reach El Cuyo, it is approximately a two and a half hour drive from CancĂșn Airport and a three-hour drive from MĂ©rida. However, due to the remote location and narrow roads, getting to Playa El Cuyo can be somewhat challenging. Despite these challenges, the beach's natural beauty and tranquility make the journey worthwhile. It's important to note that El Cuyo is somewhat remote, and there are no ATMs or banks in the area. Most establishments only accept cash, and specialized stores are limited. The wireless network is generally good but may experience occasional interruptions due to the lack of antennas in the area. Visitors can also explore the sandy streets of the village by renting bicycles.
