Playa de El Médano

Playa de El Médano, situated in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona in Tenerife, is a picturesque beach located in the southern part of the island. It is recognized for its unique gray sand and the breathtaking view of the Montaña Roja volcanic cone. The beach is divided into different sections, with the area nearest to the town being more family-friendly due to the calmer waves, while the part further away from the town is favored for water sports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing. The beach has been a host to internationally recognized championships including the Windsurf and Kitesurf World Championship. The beach possesses a mix of sandy and rocky areas, along with volcanic rock formations. It extends over a long distance and is partitioned into various coves, making it a perfect spot for sunbathing, swimming, and engaging in a range of water sports, depending on the wind conditions. Despite its size, it is a small bay and there are limited sunbeds and umbrellas available. However, visitors often find the rocks or beach a comfortable place to lay. In terms of facilities, Playa de El Médano offers a variety of amenities. It features a wooden promenade in the shopping area which is lined with several small shops and coffee bars. Restaurants and shops extend along the entire length of the beach, offering a diverse range of dining options. Apart from the seafront establishments, there are also excellent eateries located on the local streets. The beach is equipped with free toilets situated in the town center. Parking at the beach is abundant, with ample spaces available, including areas designated for camper vans near the beach. Despite being a popular spot, the beach retains a distinctly Spanish feel, setting it apart from other tourist-oriented beaches along the coast. The beach is conveniently located not far from the airport, making it accessible with a short 15-minute taxi ride.
