Episkopi Beach is a renowned sandy beach located in the Rethymno region of Crete, Greece, about 12 kilometers west of Rethymno city and 2 kilometers south of the inland village of Episkopi. It is part of a long beach strip that begins from Georgioupoli and extends several kilometers to the east, bordered by the Mousela River on the west and a river that flows through the Petre gorge on the east.
This beach is characterized by its vast stretch of sand, providing ample space for visitors and creating a peaceful atmosphere without the usual crowds found at other beaches. The beach's natural beauty is complemented by clear waters, although their clarity can sometimes be affected by surf conditions due to the beach's open location. It is frequently affected by "meltemia", a northwestern daily wind common in the Aegean Sea, resulting in waves, wind, and the presence of seaweeds.
Episkopi Beach offers a range of amenities to enhance visitor comfort. Parts of the beach are organized with facilities such as beach bars, taverns, and cafeterias, offering sunbeds, parasols, and showers. There are also play areas for children in the nearby restaurants. For those interested in water sports, these can be enjoyed on the west side of the beach.
As for safety measures, there is a lifeguard tower and signs to ensure the well-being of beachgoers. Although the beach's restaurants are not directly on the beach, they offer a variety of food and drink options to beachgoers.
Parking at Episkopi Beach is conveniently arranged, with options to park on the road or in a designated parking lot. Accessibility to the beach is straightforward, with the main island road running along the beach. It can be easily reached by car from Rethymno or by taking a bus from the city center, as there is a stop there. The entrance to the water is marked by a narrow strip of small pebbles, which are easily crossed, making entry into the water simple.
In addition to the beach experience, visitors to the area can explore the authentic village of Argiroupoli, which features the archaeological site of Ancient Lappa, as well as Kournas lake. They can also discover the nearby springs of Argyroupoli and the area's canyons.
