Geropotamos Beach

Geropotamos Beach is a peaceful seaside village located on the northern coast of Crete, Greece. It lies 18 kilometres east of Rethymnon and 3 kilometres west of Panormo. The beach is named after the Geropotamos River, which flows into the eastern end of the beach, keeping the sandy shore and clear waters cool throughout the year.

Geropotamos Beach is known for its uncrowded atmosphere despite its ease of access. It is reachable via the main road that connects Heraklion and Rethymno, and it's also accessible by bus. The beach features a mix of fine sand and pebbles, with a rocky terrain that offers a unique natural charm. However, the beach experiences high waves and the waters can get deep quickly, so visitors with children are advised to be cautious.

The beach is slightly organized, offering sustainably made umbrellas from defoliated palm branches and sunbeds available for rent. There's also a friendly catering service that serves refreshments and snacks at reasonable prices. Visitors are advised to be mindful of their food, as ducks may approach for a share. The beach is pet-friendly, but pets are not allowed in the areas where chairs are available for rent.

Parking at Geropotamos Beach is free and ample, providing convenience for those visiting by car. A traffic camera is located just before the turn after the bridge when approaching the beach, so drivers should exercise caution.

The area is also recognized for its natural beauty and biodiversity. It is home to wetlands that provide shelter for rare birds and animals, including the rare monk seal and falcons that reside in the shore's caves. A few meters west of Geropotamos Beach is a stunning rocky arch called Kamara, which can only be reached by boat. The east end of Geropotamos, known as Cape Lianos or the Lavris area, features a rocky cape with small artificial coves. This area, along with the Geropotamos wetland, is protected under the European program "Natura 2000" and is home to various indigenous and endangered species.
