Glyka Nera Beach is a long, secluded beach located in Crete. The beach is known for its unique natural characteristics, including its greyish sand and pebbles. Despite its somewhat rocky entrance, the waters of Glyka Nera Beach are renowned for their clarity and changing colors, ranging from aqua to turquoise to azure. The visibility in the water is exceptional, even more than 100 meters off shore.
The beach is accessible either by a 25-30 minute hike or by boat. The hike, while not overly difficult, requires proper footwear and free hands for safety. Alternatively, a ferry service is available from Sfakia to Glyka Nera Beach and Loutro.
Despite its remote location, Glyka Nera Beach offers several amenities for visitors. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available for rent, and there is a free shower on the beach, supplied by fresh water springs under the sand. At one end of the beach, there are toilets and a taverna.
The beach is divided into two main areas. The area closer to Sfakia is often occupied by nudists, while the other end, near the taverna, is more family-friendly. Despite its length and the availability of amenities, Glyka Nera Beach is not typically crowded, even during the peak season.
One of the unique features of Glyka Nera Beach is the presence of fresh water springs that flow into the sea, making the water slightly cooler than other beaches. This natural phenomenon also creates a unique sizzling sound when diving into the water.
While there is no designated parking area at the beach, visitors usually park at the trail head before embarking on the hike to the beach. It's worth noting that a large part of the beach is fenced off due to the risk of falling rocks. Despite this, Glyka Nera Beach is a must-visit location for its dramatic scenery, peace and quiet, and memorable swimming experience.
