Cala Higuera

Cala Higuera, also known as Playa Higuera, is a secluded beach located in the municipality of Níjar, in the province of Almería, Spain. The beach is part of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Maritime-Terrestrial Natural Park, which holds the status of a Biosphere Reserve. The beach has a length of approximately 220 meters and a width of 15 meters, and it is composed of stones and gravel.

The beach is known for its calm waters and natural beauty, which includes clear waters that are suitable for snorkeling. A variety of fish can be observed in these waters, though visitors should be mindful of sea urchins. The beach is surrounded by cliffs and rock formations, providing opportunities for climbing and exploration. The area surrounding the beach is a nature reserve, offering scenic walks with views of the mountain and sea. It is home to a variety of wild flowers and small birds, including a bright red beaked Finch. Spectacular mountain views are a common sight, with the occasional spotting of a herd of goats.

Cala Higuera offers a peaceful environment for relaxation, as it is typically not crowded. The beach can be accessed easily either on foot or by car. It is located close to the road AL-3108, and is less than a 15-minute cycle ride from San Jose. Access to the beach involves a drive down a dirt track, followed by a short 5-minute walk, which includes a small climb making it suitable for children and any able-bodied person.

The beach has a nearby bar where visitors can enjoy lunch. However, the nearest marina, Puerto Deportivo San José, is located 1 kilometer away. While the beach does not offer lifeguard services, it is equipped with a surveillance system for safety.
