Kataprosopo Beach

Kataprosopo Beach, also known as Chrysi, is a popular summer destination renowned for its natural beauty and biodiversity. The beach is located on an island, which is accessible by tourist boats from the port of Ierapetra. The island is home to the largest naturally formed Juniper forest (Juniperus macrocarpa) in Greece, with most trees being 200 years old and reaching a height of 7 meters. The vegetation density is approximately 28 trees per hectare. The beach itself is characterized by its golden sand and crystal clear waters, offering visitors a chance to dive and explore its underwater beauty. The beach is also surrounded by a number of caves within the cedar forest, making it an ideal spot for free camping. However, visitors are urged to respect the natural environment as the island is a designated nature area. There are no vehicles or established road networks on the island. Instead, wooden paths and sand roads connect the harbor to the beach. The island also offers amenities such as sunbeds and food services, although these are limited and can be expensive. Despite its popularity, the beach can offer a sense of solitude, with some areas remaining uncrowded even during the peak season. However, the beach can get crowded, particularly when tourist boats arrive. It's worth noting that there are no shaded areas on the beach, so visitors are advised to prepare accordingly.
