Koumbes Beach

Koumbes Beach is a small beach situated approximately 2km west of the city center of Rethymnon, a town in the region of Crete, Greece. It holds a unique position as the only beach in the western part of the city. Noted for its natural charm, Koumbes Beach has a shoreline made up of sand and fine pebbles. The beach offers a striking view of the Fortezza fortress, a sight that has influenced its name, derived from the Turkish word "Kubbe," meaning "dome."

Despite being located near a busy road, the beach offers a tranquil retreat, often frequented by locals and generally less crowded. It is particularly renowned for its snorkeling opportunities, with the sea outside the concrete barrier being deeper and pleasant for swimming. An enclosed, sandy paddling area is one of the beach's key features. This knee-thigh deep area offers a safe and enjoyable spot for children and is known for its notably warmer water.

Koumbes Beach provides a variety of amenities for visitors. These include lifeguards, umbrellas, sun chairs, showers, and changing rooms. There are also several eateries nearby, offering a range of options from restaurants and taverns to snack bars and cafes.

Despite some infrastructure issues such as broken stairs and railings, and a degree of litter, major improvement projects have been undertaken to enhance the beach's facilities, including the addition of walkways. The beach is easily accessible from the city center, with a walking distance of no more than 20 minutes, and can also be reached by bus. There is a parking area available for those who prefer to drive, although it has been reported to be quite dirty at times.
