Playa de La Riera is a picturesque beach situated in the municipality of Pineda de Mar, in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is known for its golden sand and moderate waves, and it stretches 580 meters in length and 40 meters in width. This urban beach is typically bustling during the peak season, although it tends to be less crowded due to the surrounding area not being heavily populated with hotels.
The beach is easily accessible on foot, with the nearest road being the N-II. It is also reachable via urban public transport. There are tunnels that lead to the beach, providing a pleasant walkway that bypasses the railway tracks. Furthermore, the beach is bordered by a promenade that is perfect for those who enjoy seaside strolls or cycling. However, it is worth noting that the beach does not provide access for disabled individuals.
As for parking, the beach has an unguarded parking lot with less than 50 spaces available. The beach also offers several amenities, including toilets that are open all year round, exercise machines for physical activities, and benches for relaxation. There is also a tannoy system that announces when the lifeguards have finished their duties for the day. Despite the beach's depth which drops away quickly, it is considered safe due to the presence of lifeguards.
Playa de La Riera prides itself on its cleanliness, with its coarse sand composed of tiny stones that prevent the accumulation of plastic waste. However, visitors are advised to be cautious of jellyfish when venturing into the sea. The beach has been awarded the Blue Flag distinction, an accolade given by the European Foundation for Environmental Education to beaches and ports that meet specific environmental and facility conditions. It has also received the Biosphere Commitment distinction.
Unfortunately, due to the current drought situation, the showers and foot washers at the beach are closed. In case of medical emergencies, the nearest hospital, Hospital Sant Jaume, is located in Calella.
