Matosinhos / Leca Beach, also known as Piscina das Marés, is a stunning coastal area located near Porto, Portugal. It is situated in the parish of Leça da Palmeira, in the municipality of Matosinhos. Notably designed by the acclaimed Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira in the 1960s, the beach features saltwater pools that provide an alternative to traditional beach-going. This includes a children's pool and an adult pool, with an additional rock pool area where visitors can wade in to waist deep. However, the Piscina das Marés is currently closed and is projected to reopen in the 2024 bathing season.
The beach is recognized for its robust waves, making it a favored spot for surfers. Nevertheless, these conditions can make swimming potentially hazardous, prompting visitors to remain in the shallows or enjoy a paddle. Despite this, the sea maintains its warmth even into October.
Visitors to Matosinhos / Leca Beach can enjoy a range of amenities including showers and toilets. A cafe bar on-site offers loungers and umbrellas for rent, enhancing the beach experience. However, it's worth noting that lockers are not available, though security guards are present for visitor safety. The beach is also complemented by an array of restaurants in the surrounding area. However, visitors should be aware that the beach can be windy at times.
Reaching Matosinhos / Leca Beach is straightforward. It can be accessed by a 45-minute metro ride from Porto, followed by a 20-minute walk through the city's old town. Alternatively, buses run along the side of the beach for those wishing to return to Porto, and taxis are also readily available. As a popular destination, the beach can be crowded, particularly during peak season.
