Praia do Molhe

Praia do Molhe is a picturesque urban beach situated in the city of Porto, Portugal. The beach is known for its unique natural features including a rocky area between the tides and a coastal structure, known as the "molhe," which extends into the sea demarcating the bathing area. This structure, historically part of the Carreiros port, served as an alternative entrance to the Douro bar when it was inaccessible. Two granite markers, once used to guide boats safely, still stand as a testament to this history. The beach's coastal landscape is further enhanced by the Pérgola da Foz, a popular landmark and one of the most emblematic postcards of Porto. The beach has a sandy stretch of about 168 meters and is surrounded by massive rocks and a wall, which makes the ocean calmer and more suitable for swimming. However, some parts of the beach are more stony than sandy, which may not be ideal for swimming. Praia do Molhe has a rich tradition of bathing that dates back to the 19th century and it became the most important seaside resort on the Porto coast in the early 20th century. The beach was a popular spot for young people to swim, and the beach huts served as a gathering place for Porto's elite society. The beach offers a range of amenities including a boardwalk and a rinse shower. Visitors have the option to bring their own umbrella or rent one. Several bars and cafes dot the beach, offering good service and contributing to a pleasant atmosphere. Despite its attractions, Praia do Molhe is not typically crowded, making it a peaceful and enjoyable destination for beachgoers, at least during off-peak times such as the month of September. To reach Praia do Molhe, visitors can take several bus lines, including the STCP - 1M, STCP - 500, 200, 203, 204 of the STPC bus company. The beach is also accessible by the City Sightseeing Portugal tourist buses, specifically the red and yellow lines.
