Playa de Mónsul is a renowned beach situated in the municipality of Níjar, in Almería, Andalusia, Spain. It is recognized for its unique natural features such as its tranquil waters, dark sand, and a large tongue-shaped rock formation that resembles a petrified giant wave. The beach is also known for its clear waters that are suitable for snorkeling, and its sticky sand, which is framed by volcanic rocks right on the beach.
With a width of 50 meters and a length of 300 meters, the beach is isolated and more secluded compared to other beaches. It is surrounded by vegetation and is particularly enjoyed by naturists due to its calm and peaceful environment. Despite its seclusion, it does not tend to get overcrowded, even during peak season. However, visitors should be aware of the potential for strong currents when swimming. The beach is also suitable for small children as it gradually gets deeper.
Playa de Mónsul does not offer amenities such as showers, freshwater fountains, or lifeguard services. Visitors are advised to bring everything they may need and to take all their belongings with them when they leave.
Access to the beach is either by foot or by car. For those choosing to drive, the nearest road is AL-3108. A day permit is required to enter the area and the last stretch of the journey involves a dirt track. The beach has an unguarded parking lot with a capacity of 50 to 100 spaces. During the months of July and August, parking at the beach is paid and can sometimes be full. It is recommended to arrive early as parking is limited and parking along the road just before the beach is not permitted. Alternatively, public transportation to the beach is available from the center of San José every half an hour.
Playa de Mónsul is part of the Cabo de Gata region, which is known for its aggressive mosquitoes that appear about an hour before sunset. Therefore, it may be advisable to leave the beach earlier in the evening.
