Piedra Playa, also known by other names such as El Castillo and El Toston, is a prominent beach located in the fishing village of El Cotillo, Fuerteventura. Found on the southwest side of El Cotillo, it is a characteristic beach of the west coast of Fuerteventura. The beach is about 1500 meters long, nestled amidst breathtaking cliffs, and is known for its golden sand.
Piedra Playa is notable for its strong waves and forceful currents, making it a place of caution for swimmers. Visitors are encouraged to be careful when swimming and avoid swimming alone. Owing to these water conditions, the beach is a favored destination for windsurfers, kitesurfers, and surf enthusiasts, especially during the spring, summer, autumn, and winter seasons. The strong northeast trade winds that blow regularly during spring and summer make it an ideal spot for these activities.
Visitors can reach Piedra Playa by driving along a dirt road that leads to the cliffs surrounding the beach. Parking is available at the top of the cliffs, and from here, visitors can descend to the beach using one of the gravel paths. However, visitors are advised to carry everything they need for the day as the return trip up the cliffs can be strenuous.
The beach lacks amenities such as bars, restaurants, sunbeds, and umbrellas, contributing to its wild and untouched charm. However, lifeguards are present during the summer months from July to October for safety. Despite the lack of facilities, it is a wonderful location to watch the sunset, enjoy the waves, and appreciate the natural beauty of the area.
Piedra Playa is not usually crowded, providing a peaceful experience for visitors. The beach's beautiful landscape is worth exploring, with lagoons forming on the beach depending on the tide. These lagoons provide warm water suitable for children to play in, although the tough access to the beach might be challenging for families with young children. Despite these challenges, the beach is worth a visit for its stunning views and serene atmosphere.
