Red Sand Beach, often referred to as Kokkini Ammos, is a secluded beach nestled near the town of Archángelos in Greece. This unique spot is recognized for its distinctive natural beauty, characterized by its vibrant red sand and surrounding cliffs. The beach's landscape is further enhanced by its red rocks that stretch out into the sea, creating a truly picturesque setting. The area is also home to a variety of wildlife, including goats, and is known for its multiple bays, the most famous of which is the red sand bay.
One of the prominent features of Red Sand Beach is its inaccessibility by conventional means due to its rugged terrain and the steep cliffs that encircle it. The only ways to reach this beach are either by boat, kayak, or on foot. The journey by foot involves navigating a nearly vertical path behind a large rock near the viewpoint where the roads for cars terminate. However, travelers are advised to exercise caution when anchoring their boats due to the mostly rocky seabed with only a few sandy areas. The location is known for its gusty winds, particularly after 15:00 and at night, making it an ideal spot for activities like stand-up paddleboarding or kayaking.
The beach is less suitable for children due to its waters, which start shallow but become deeper further out. Furthermore, the beach has limited facilities, making it necessary for visitors to bring their own umbrellas for shade. Despite the lack of amenities, the beach offers a certain degree of privacy and some shade, making it a comfortable spot for visitors.
Parking is available approximately 1 km from the beach, near a crossroad. Despite its hidden location, the beach can get quite crowded, particularly when boats packed with tourists arrive. However, a second, more secluded beach can be found nearby, down a steep slope next to the road, surrounded by olive trees, further enhancing the area's natural beauty.
