Shanklin Beach, a notable seaside destination, is situated on the southeast coast of the Isle of Wight. Characterized by a blend of sand and pebbles, it is known for its flat gradient that is suitable for swimming and its safety features, making it an ideal location for children's play.
The beach is backed by a traditional English seafront promenade and is adorned with majestic cliffs. Groynes support the beach by keeping the sand in place. A significant feature of the beach is a high sea wall and pavement promenade between the sea and the Esplanade. The beach once had a pier that was destroyed in a hurricane in 1987, but there is now a semi-circular vantage point with benches, which marks the former entrance to the pier.
Shanklin Esplanade, which borders the beach, is home to several traditional British seaside attractions. It features a large amusement arcade with activities like crazy golf, bowling, go-karting, and indoor golf. Outdoor activities include pirate and dinosaur-themed crazy golf courses. Various amenities such as cafes, beach shops, and deckchair hire are available. For those seeking an active beach experience, water sports are also on offer.
For dining and accommodation, the southern end of the Esplanade is lined with hotels, pubs, and restaurants. Beach huts are located along the sea wall, and there is a thatched pub called Fisherman's Cottage at the foot of Shanklin Chine.
The beach can be accessed by walking down from Shanklin Old Village through a scenic route that passes through trees and parkland. Parking is conveniently available along the seafront, and there is an additional car park halfway along the front. Public transport options include Southern Vectis buses and the Island Line train line, with Shanklin being the last stop.
Despite its popularity, Shanklin Beach is not overly crowded. It maintains a balance of being a tourist hotspot while still preserving a sense of tranquility. Visitors are advised not to feed the seagulls, thereby helping to maintain the cleanliness and ecological balance of the beach.
