Playa de Somo is a semi-urban beach located in Ribamontán al Mar, on the east side of Santander Bay. The beach boasts a generous length of 2,000 meters and an 80-meter width, which may fluctuate. Its coastline is adorned with a blend of golden and regular sand, offering a vast, fine sandy stretch for visitors.
The beach is accessible by various means of transportation. Visitors can reach the beach on foot, by car, or by boat. For those coming by car, there is a parking area with over 100 spaces available. However, it's important to note that parking is not free. An intercity bus from Santander also provides access to the beach for those relying on public transport.
Playa de Somo is equipped with several amenities to ensure a comfortable visit for its guests. It offers facilities such as toilets, showers, and trash bins. While there are no rental options for sunbeds or umbrellas, there are restaurants available for dining. The beach also features a sports area, though it lacks a designated children's area or nautical club for rental or activities.
While nudism and scuba diving are not practiced at Playa de Somo, it's a popular destination for wave surfers due to its high waves. The beach also allows for swimming, with the opportunity even to swim to a nearby island. Walking is another activity enjoyed here, and dog walking is permitted in the morning until 9 AM and in the evening after 8 PM.
Despite its wide expanse, Playa de Somo can get extremely crowded during the summer, reflecting its popularity among both locals and tourists. Visitors can also enjoy stunning views of the city on the other side of the bay and a lighthouse. For emergencies, the nearest hospital, Hospital Universitario Marqués de Valdecilla, is located 20 kilometers away.
