The beach is known for its unique natural characteristics. Unlike most beaches on Lake Constance, a portion of Strandbad Ă–hningen is covered with sand, creating an inviting sandy shoreline. The rest of the area features a large sunbathing lawn. The beach is surrounded by lush green grass and towering trees, providing shaded areas for visitors. The water at the beach is known for its good quality. The narrowing of Untersee creates a slight current in front of the beach, ensuring optimal swimming conditions even when the water level is low. However, some visitors may find the water to be muddy.
Strandbad Ă–hningen is equipped with a variety of amenities to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience for its visitors. It features a children's playground, table tennis tables, a diving tower, and a beach volleyball court, providing a range of activities for families. In 2008, the beach underwent renovations, resulting in new sanitary facilities, changing rooms, and a restaurant with a large lakeside terrace. The restaurant serves a variety of dishes, with an emphasis on freshly made pizzas and fish dishes.
The beach has ample parking space, which is free of charge and includes shaded areas. It is located in a relatively remote area but is easily accessible and well worth the visit. Despite its remote location, the beach is popular among families, couples, and children, making it a bustling spot during the summer season. However, it's important to note that the beach is closed during the winter season and reopens in the spring.
To ensure the safety of the swimmers, the German Lifeguard Association (DLRG) is present during the summer season and also provides swimming courses for children. The beach has specific opening hours, from 8:00 am to 11:00 pm daily between April 1st and September 30th, and an admission fee is applicable until 6:30 pm. The beach also offers gift vouchers that can be purchased on-site, and there's an option for visitors to charge their e-bikes.
