Thick Sand, also known as Pachia Ammos, is the primary beach in the town of Paleochora, situated on the southwest coast of Crete. The beach is well-known for its fine, white sand that stretches over a length of one kilometer. Despite its popularity among locals and tourists, the expansive size of the beach makes it seem less crowded, providing an ideal environment for a variety of visitors, including families, groups of friends, and individuals.
One of the key natural characteristics of Thick Sand is its shallow, crystal clear waters, which remain comfortably warm for swimming even towards the end of September. The beach's modest depth extends quite a distance into the water, making it suitable for children and families. However, the beach can experience large waves during westerly or southerly winds, urging visitors to exercise caution during these conditions. Some tamarisk trees along the beach provide natural shade, adding to the beach's overall appeal.
Thick Sand is equipped with a number of amenities, ensuring a comfortable visit for beachgoers. These include umbrellas and sunbeds available for rent, as well as free showers and changing rooms. The beach also features a lifeguard, bars, cafeterias, and water sports equipment. A portion of the beach is designated for naturalism, which is preferred by nudists.
Although the beach does not have its own parking facilities, its convenient location near a post office and a popular coffee spot implies easy accessibility. The town of Paleochora, where Thick Sand is located, has become a popular tourist destination in recent years, with the beach being one of its main attractions. Visitors to the town have plenty of dining options along the beach, adding to the overall tourist experience.
