Playa Tómbolo

Playa Tómbolo is a National Natural Landmark located in Puerto Rico, renowned for its distinct natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere. The beach is a geological marvel, characterized by a sandbar that connects an island to the mainland. This unique landform, combined with the beach's clear blue waters and soft sand, make it a favorite amongst nature enthusiasts and beach lovers.

The beach is part of the National Park Service, ensuring its ecological preservation. It is home to a wide array of marine life, including sea urchins, fish, seaweed, and kelp. Visitors are encouraged to observe these creatures from a safe distance to avoid any potential harm, especially from the sea urchins.

One of the standout features of Playa Tómbolo is its natural pool area, which is safely enclosed by reefs. This pool, along with the surrounding cove that becomes visible at low tide, provides a serene environment ideal for relaxation. However, visitors should be cautious around the waves and current on the other side of the cove, as they can be quite powerful.

Despite its natural beauty, the beach does lack natural shelter and shade. Visitors are therefore advised to bring their own sun protection, such as umbrellas, tents, or tarps. For those who prefer natural shade, there are a few spots under trees where beach blankets can be laid out. The beach is also deemed appropriate for discreet nude sunbathing.

Getting to the beach involves a walk of approximately two miles from the first gate, as the gate leading directly to the beach is often closed. The road to the beach is quite rough, and only large vehicles can get close to it. For those choosing to walk, it takes about 20 minutes to reach Playa Tómbolo.

Parking at Playa Tómbolo can be challenging due to its popularity, and visitors are advised to arrive early to secure a spot. However, despite being a well-visited location, the beach is not typically crowded, providing ample space for visitors to enjoy their time.
