The Trockenstrand Upleward, situated in the coastal village of Upleward within the Krummhörn-Greetsiel holiday region in Ostfriesland, Germany, is a unique dry beach. The beach, opened in August 2000, is the world's first dry beach and is located directly behind the dike rather than by the sea. This characteristic allows for recreational activities even during high tide. The beach spans an area of 9,000 square meters.
The Trockenstrand Upleward underwent a comprehensive renovation in 2020 as part of the "Dorferneuerung 7 Warfendörfer" program. This renovation introduced numerous new attractions to the beach, enhancing its appeal to visitors. These include a pirate ship, water games, a new stage, various seating and lounging areas, a volleyball court, and a beach soccer field. Furthermore, a wheelchair-accessible wooden boardwalk has been constructed on the premises for easy accessibility.
The Trockenstrand Upleward offers an array of amenities for visitors. These include a playground with various equipment and a sports facility, making it an ideal location for families. The Watt'n Blick kiosk, located adjacent to the beach, serves as a starting point for many mudflat hikes. It offers a wide selection of drinks, snacks, and souvenirs. Sanitary facilities with warm showers are also available for visitors' convenience.
Parking spaces are available in ample supply near the beach, and the beach can be reached via Erbsenbindereistraße. However, a parking permit is required. It's worth noting that dogs are not allowed on the beach and the playground, although they are permitted on the nearby dike.
Despite its unique charm, Trockenstrand Upleward has been described as somewhat unkempt, and shade is limited with only a single tree providing respite from the sun. However, this does not deter visitors from enjoying the recreational activities it offers or embarking on walks along the dike. Visitors are advised to exercise caution when visiting the adjacent Uplewarder Watt due to its potentially dangerous, muddy terrain.
