A Beach Gnola, situated in Maratea, Italy, is a remarkable part of the Monte San Biagio – Serra di Castrocucco mountain range. The beach, stretching over a length of 10.5 km, is nestled between altitudes of 0 m to 490 m, thus making it an exceptional site that blends coastal beauty and mountainous grandeur.
One of the primary attractions of A Beach Gnola is its hiking trail. The trail, suitable for hikers, encompasses a total elevation gain of +160 m and a descent of -648 m. It takes approximately 3 to 4 hours to complete the hike, excluding breaks. Along the trail, hikers will come across a water point named Ririminni, located halfway through the hike. Hikers are advised to carry necessary equipment such as high trekking boots, telescopic poles, hiking clothing, and a well-stocked trekking backpack. In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, hikers are also required to carry a mask, hand sanitizer, and a green pass.
The trail begins at the intersection of Santa Caterina, where the Chapel of Madonna di Fatima is situated. It winds along a dirt road, promising panoramic views of the sea, the Marina coastline, mountainous villages of Massa and Brefaro, and the Tortora and Trecchina mountains. The vegetation along the trail is a mix of sparse low scrub, with the aromatic myrtle and rosemary and the delicate hues of heather flowers adding to the scenic beauty. The trail also features an olive grove, an old threshing floor, and a watering place for podolic cows. The trail ends at the Castrocucco Beach, framed by ancient oak trees and juniper plants.
A Beach Gnola is a free beach, renowned for its pristine sand and pebble beach. Its natural beauty is accentuated by the mix of uneven sand and smooth stones of varying sizes. The beach is wide and spacious, providing ample room for visitors to relax under the sun. The sea, known for its crystal clear and clean water, is a significant draw for visitors, despite the water being cold at the beginning of the summer season. The beach is rarely crowded, thus ensuring a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere for visitors. However, swimmers are advised to be cautious as the sea gets deep a few meters from the shore.
Despite its remote location, A Beach Gnola does not offer any parking facilities. Visitors planning a trip to the beach are advised to arrange their own transportation. The beach does not have any amenities, so visitors are advised to bring their own supplies.
