While Altamura is celebrated for its ancient history and world-famous bread, it is an inland city set within Puglia's beautiful Murgia plateau and does not have its own beaches. However, its central location makes it an excellent and authentic base for travelers with a car who wish to explore the region's cultural heart while also enjoying day trips to two distinct and stunning coastlines. A drive of about an hour can take you to either the Adriatic or Ionian Sea.
A drive to the east brings you to the dramatic Adriatic coast, known for its limestone cliffs, sea caves, and charming coves. This is where you will find Puglia's most photographed beach, the iconic Lama Monachile, set in the heart of Polignano a Mare. Nearby, the delightful town of Monopoli offers Cala Porta Vecchia, a convenient sandy beach located right next to the historic city walls.
Alternatively, head south to the Ionian coast for a completely different experience, with long stretches of white sand and calm, turquoise waters, exemplified by the famous Punta Prosciutto. Both coasts are easily reachable for a day of sun and sea before returning to the authentic atmosphere of Altamura.
