Praia do Amado

Praia do Amado, also known as Carrapateira, is situated in the Aljezur municipality, within the scenic Costa Vicentina region of Portugal. It is characterized by its expansive sandy beach, surrounded by cliffs and is located near the village of Carrapateira in the southern part of Aljezur. The beach is demarcated by Pontal da Carrapateira, a rocky platform of significant environmental value, which houses habitats of considerable conservation importance.

The beach's natural beauty is enhanced by its rich geological diversity, which includes sedimentary, metamorphic, and volcanic rocks such as limestone, schist, and dolerite. Visitors are advised to maintain a safe distance from the cliffs due to the potential risk of landslides and falling stones.

Praia do Amado is renowned for its surfing conditions and is considered one of Portugal's best beaches for the sport. Its unique combination of continental shelf characteristics, wave conditions, and prevailing winds makes it an ideal surfing spot. The beach attracts both novice and experienced surfers and hosts various national and international competitions throughout the year. Surfing schools operate on the beach, offering lessons and holiday programs to leverage the coast's excellent natural conditions.

Visitors can also engage in other activities such as horseback riding tours at sunrise or sunset, exploring the surrounding pine forests, dunes, and sands. Additionally, there are paths and trails leading to the villages of Bordeira and Carrapateira for those who prefer to explore on foot or by bike. Along these paths, visitors can enjoy scenic views of the coastline and discover the small and oldest port of Carrapateira, located on the beach of Portinho do Forno.

Praia do Amado is easily accessible via a road from the village of Carrapateira, covering a distance of around 3 km. The beach also can be reached from the Bordeira Beach car park, situated about 5 km south along the coastline. The last 4 km of this route is a dirt track. Ample parking is available on beaten earth areas.

The beach is equipped with several amenities, including a bar, beach support services, restrooms, information and recreational facilities. During the bathing season, the beach is monitored and supervised for safety. There are also snack bars where visitors can relax and enjoy a drink while watching the sunset. However, visitors are advised to bring a jumper as the wind can get colder in the evening.

In terms of historical significance, Praia do Amado is home to an archaeological site of an ancient Islamic fishing village, dating back to the 12th century, near Portinho do Forno. Visitors can appreciate the remains of this ancient settlement and explore the nearby Zimbreirinha port.
