Praia da Amoreira is a picturesque beach located in the municipality of Aljezur, in the Algarve region of Portugal. This beach is situated within the Vicentine Coast Natural Park and is recognized for its unspoiled natural beauty.
The beach stretches for approximately 580 meters, making it one of the largest in the area. It is characterized by its wide expanse of soft, golden sand, large sand dunes, and unique rock formations on both sides. The northern section of the beach features a dark rock formation that locals liken to a giant lying down.
At the mouth of the Aljezur River, which runs for almost 10 kilometers from the village of Aljezur to the beach, the southern end of Praia da Amoreira provides a distinctive feature. Here, visitors have the option to swim in both the river and the sea. The water in the river is typically warmer than the sea, and the currents in the sea, particularly on the northern part of the beach, can be strong. As such, it is generally safer, particularly for children, to swim in the river.
During low tide, a shallow lagoon forms on the beach, providing a safe and enjoyable spot for children. The beach also boasts rock pools that can entertain young visitors. However, caution is advised at high tide due to the strong currents near the river mouth.
Praia da Amoreira is a popular spot for surfing, especially at high tide, due to its favorable sea conditions. The beach is also part of the Rota Vicentina trail, known as the Fishermen's Trail, which is ideal for hiking and offers stunning nature and viewpoints.
Access to Praia da Amoreira is most conveniently reached by car. Visitors can follow the EN120 road towards Aljezur and then towards Rogil. The beach features two car parks, one on the northern side and another near the southern viewpoint. The beach is accessible from these car parks via wooden boardwalks and stairs. However, the boardwalks may not be easily accessible for disabled visitors.
Amenities at Praia da Amoreira include two restaurants located near the car parks. Additional facilities include toilet facilities located in one of the restaurants and lifeguard services during the summer season. The beach has also been awarded a Blue Flag certification, signifying its high standards of cleanliness and environmental management. Despite its amenities and natural allure, Praia da Amoreira remains relatively uncrowded, offering a peaceful escape from mass tourism.
