Bagno Marino La Lanterna Pedocin is a public beach located in Trieste, Italy. Known for its historical significance, the beach is situated on a pier, remnants of an ancient Roman structure, that connects the mainland to the Zucco islet where the foundations of a lighthouse were once located. The beach was initially named "Bagno Alla Lanterna" after the lantern placed on the pier in 1832 as a maritime lighthouse. Over time, it became locally known as "El Pedocin."
The beach was constructed in 1903 by the Trieste municipality to provide a bathing facility for its citizens, particularly the less fortunate. Originally made with wooden structures, they were replaced with concrete in the 1930s, including a famous three-meter-high wall. This wall is a unique feature of the beach, dividing it into two distinct zones: one for women and children up to 12 years old, and another for men. This characteristic has drawn the attention of tourists and journalists worldwide.
The beach is characterized by its pebble terrain, making it advisable for visitors to bring water shoes for their comfort. Despite the absence of shade and trees, its close proximity to the city centre makes it a popular spot for a quick sea dip. The beach is also known for its peaceful atmosphere, with soft murmured talks between friends or acquaintances commonly observed.
Bagno Marino La Lanterna Pedocin is equipped with several amenities for the convenience of its visitors. Among these are showers, a first aid room, and storage for beach equipment. There is also a kiosk, benches, and chairs available. However, lockers are not provided, so visitors are advised to bring minimal valuables. For people with disabilities, the beach offers accessible facilities including toilets, indoor and outdoor showers, and a changing room with a cot.
The bathing area is safeguarded by floating barriers that fence off the sea, providing a large enough area for swimming while keeping floating debris out. A refreshment point is also open during the summer in the women/children zone. The beach opens year-round for sun therapy, while swimming is permitted from May 15th to September 30th. Access to the beach requires a small entrance fee.
Getting to the beach can be somewhat challenging as it involves navigating through car parks. Despite this, the beach's unique features and historical significance make it a must-visit location for beach lovers.
