Plage de Balistra is a tranquil, spacious beach located approximately ten kilometers from the port of Bonifacio, towards Porto-Vecchio. Situated within the Bouches de Bonifacio nature reserve, the beach is part of the wider Gulf of Santamanza and is the largest and most accessible within the commune of Bonifacio. Despite its size, the beach is typically not crowded, making it an ideal spot for a peaceful retreat and family-friendly outings.
The beach is characterized by its natural beauty, with white cliffs to the south and a large pond to the north. Fine white sand and turquoise water contribute to its picturesque setting, while lush vegetation and juniper bushes on top of the dunes add to its unique character. The sand gives the swimming area a distinctive color, reminiscent of the beautiful lagoons found in the south of Corsica.
Plage de Balistra offers a range of amenities. During the summer season, professional lifeguards are present and a water sports school operates, offering equipment rentals and lessons in activities such as stand-up paddleboarding, kitesurfing, and wingsurfing. For those with reduced mobility, a ramp provides access to the water. On-site, there is a wooden restaurant and a beach hut, although visitors are advised to bring their own food as services are limited.
Reaching the beach involves navigating a long, bumpy dirt road, which may be challenging for low cars. However, the journey is generally considered to be worthwhile due to the beach's scenic beauty. At the end of the road, visitors will find a large, free parking lot situated next to the beach.
As the beach is located within a nature reserve, visitors are asked to respect the environment by adhering to the rules and ensuring that all waste is removed upon departure. The beach's often windy conditions can be a challenge for swimmers, but they attract windsurfers who take advantage of the strong winds. Those seeking shelter from the wind can do so behind the juniper bushes, while being mindful of the fragile environment.
