Cobijero Beach, situated in the eastern region of Asturias, is a unique coastal attraction known for its distinct natural features. This inland beach is nestled amidst scenic hills and cliffs, which add to its picturesque beauty. The beach is under a kilometer in length and about 30 meters wide, boasting a semicircular shape. The area around the beach is characterized by lush meadows, contributing to its serene ambiance.
One of the main highlights of Cobijero Beach is its white sand and saltwater pool, which is a result of the Cantabrian Sea seeping in below the cliffs, located about 100 meters away from the beach. The water depth in this pool varies with the tides, creating a dynamic visual spectacle. Moreover, the beach is known to transform with the tide, filling its pool with crystal clear water, adding to its charm.
A unique feature of Cobijero Beach is its network of caves and natural arches. The "de los Ijancanos" cave serves as a prelude to these natural wonders. More notably, the Cobijeru cave links the coast to the higher interior area through a gallery filled with stalactites and stalagmites. A flashlight is recommended for exploring this cave, which features a natural balcony overlooking the sea at its end. This vantage point offers views of a small interior lake, its water reflecting hues of red and green due to the algae on the rocks. In addition to the caves, the area also includes the Puente Caballu, a natural arch that offers impressive views of the sea and crashing waves.
Despite its natural allure and easy accessibility, Cobijero Beach is not typically crowded, offering a peaceful and serene environment for visitors. It can only be reached on foot, but the journey is not difficult. There is a nearby parking area for convenience. The beach is an ideal spot for spending an afternoon, particularly on weekends. However, visitors are advised to avoid the caves during strong tides. The surrounding area also features the ruins of a tidal mill and another beach called "La Presa," which is similar to Cobijero but has a muddy floor.
