Praia da Cordoama is an Atlantic beach situated less than 5km from Vila do Bispo on Portugal's western coast, known as Costa Vicentina. This beach is part of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park and is recognized for its natural beauty. The beach's dimensions are approximately 500m in length and 30m in width, providing ample space for beachgoers to engage in a variety of activities.
The beach is surrounded by impressive black cliffs that are composed of schist, graywacke, and quartz. These cliffs, along with the beach's expansive white sandy area, contribute to the breathtaking scenery. During low tide, visitors can walk to neighboring beaches and appreciate the oceanic views, the waves, and the geological structure of the cliffs.
Praia da Cordoama is particularly popular among surfers due to the consistent rough and cold ocean conditions, even during summer. Local fishermen from Vila do Bispo also frequent this beach. There is a viewpoint called Miradouro do Castelejo on the beach's western side, which local shellfish gatherers use to observe sea conditions for collecting percebes, a highly prized local seafood.
The beach offers several amenities for visitors, such as a café-restaurant and toilet facilities. Surfboard and wetsuit rentals are also available for those looking to enjoy the waves. Despite these facilities, the beach maintains a wild and untouched atmosphere.
The beach is easily accessible via a paved road, and a regularized pedestrian path leads to it. A paved parking area near the beach can accommodate around 90 vehicles. During the bathing season, which runs from June 1st to September 30th, the beach is regularly monitored by the Maritime Authority and lifeguards to ensure the safety of the visitors.
One of the unique features of Praia da Cordoama is its ability to accommodate both crowded and quiet areas. Visitors can join the lively atmosphere near the main areas or opt for a more tranquil experience by walking a bit further away from the crowds. The beach is also known for its stunning sunsets, making it an ideal spot for a long, relaxing walk at the end of the day.
