Côte des Basques Beach, situated in Biarritz, is renowned for its surfing culture and is often referred to as the birthplace of the sport. The beach is characterized by its vast expanse of fine sand and offers an exceptional view of the Spanish coast. It is also known for its beautiful sunsets and the natural beauty of its surroundings. However, the sand disappears completely during high tides when the tide coefficient exceeds 45, making swimming difficult and even leading to the suspension of the activity.
The beach is surrounded by cliffs and is frequented by surfers due to its large waves, making it a great spot for people watching. However, beginners are advised to leave the water before the first waves hit the rocks. Although the beach is monitored by two lifeguards and has a Jet Ski available for emergencies, swimming and other water activities outside of official surveillance dates are done at one's own risk.
Côte des Basques Beach is equipped with a number of amenities including surf schools, a surf club, food trucks, and restaurants. Despite its popularity, the beach is well-maintained and holds the Blue Flag certification for cleanliness.
Access to the beach can be gained either by walking along the promenade or from the town itself. However, visitors should be prepared for a steep ascent and descent in some areas. One of the concerns noted by visitors is the presence of unleashed dogs on the beach, despite signage indicating that dogs are not permitted.
The beach's popularity does not seem to result in overcrowding, but visitors should be aware that swimming might not be possible during high tides.
