Praia das Cabanas Velhas is a secluded beach situated in the southern coast of Vila do Bispo, within the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. The beach is surrounded by a picturesque landscape, with eroded cliffs and unique rock formations on both ends. The beach's sand is a blend of white sand and pebbles, and small rocks are scattered both on the beach and in the water.
The beach, named after the seasonal dwellings of the fishermen who once operated here, spans approximately 500 meters in length. It offers a tranquil ambiance, rarely crowded even during the peak of the summer season. Its secluded location and the peace it offers make it an ideal spot for nature lovers.
The beach is accessible through a paved road, and a pedestrian path has been regularized for convenience. A medium-sized, unpaved parking area is available near the beach, with the capacity to accommodate around 100 vehicles.
Praia das Cabanas Velhas offers several amenities for its visitors. A beach support facility that includes a café-restaurant with toilets is available, and sunbeds and parasols can also be rented. The beach is regularly monitored by the lifeguards from June 1st to September 30th, ensuring safety for all visitors.
Despite its serene waters and fine sand, the beach may not be ideal for swimming due to large rocks under the water line. Nonetheless, the calm waters, influenced by the Mediterranean, are inviting for most of the year. The beach also attracts fishing enthusiasts, particularly on the eastern side where a pier carved into the rocky cliff can be found.
The beach is recognized for its adherence to quality and environmental standards, having been awarded the Blue Flag and Gold Quality certifications. The beach bar and restaurant serve good quality food at reasonable prices, and the area is kept clean and tidy, enhancing the overall visitor experience.
To reach Praia das Cabanas Velhas, the easiest mode of transportation is by car. For those who prefer to explore, a hiking path atop the cliffs offers an amazing view of the coastline. The ruins of the Fort of Almádena can also be found on the cliffs to the west of the beach, adding a touch of history to the beautiful natural setting.
