Spiaggia della Purità, also known as Purity Beach, is situated in the seaside town of Gallipoli, in the Salento region of Puglia, Italy. This public beach, known for its serene ambiance and unspoiled beauty, is set in a small bay at the end of the historic center of the town. It lies beneath the city walls, offering a picturesque view of the Ionian Sea.
The beach is renowned for its natural characteristics, including its golden sand and calm, crystal-clear water. The shallow turquoise sea is perfect for safe swimming, even for children. Occasionally, dead plant material may wash ashore, believed to be from the local olive trees, but the water remains clean and suitable for swimming.
Spiaggia della Purità does not offer any amenities such as sunbeds, so visitors are advised to bring their own necessities. However, there are several shops nearby where visitors can purchase food, drinks, and other items. Despite its popularity, the beach maintains a relaxed atmosphere, especially during sunset, and visitors can usually find a place to sit.
Parking near the beach can be challenging, as the nearest parking lot is located about a 10-15 minute walk away. Therefore, visitors may need to walk a short distance to reach the beach. The beach is easily accessible for those residing in the old town, being just a short walk away.
The beach's name, which translates to "Purity Beach," is associated with the legends related to the Virgin of Sant'Agata, the patron saint of Gallipoli. The Church of Santa Maria della Purità, one of the oldest churches in Gallipoli, is located just above the beach. Built in 1664, the church's facade is adorned with three decorative ceramic paintings from the 19th century, and it houses several beautiful 18th-century paintings and two statues carried in processions during Holy Week.
Since the 19th century, Spiaggia della Purità has been a popular meeting place, notably among sailing enthusiasts. In the 1960s, it began to gain significance as a tourist destination. Despite being a small beach, it offers a unique beach experience with its historical and cultural significance, beautiful surroundings, and calm waters.
