Plage du Donnant is a serene beach located in the town of Sauzon, situated on Belle-Île-en-Mer's wild coast, facing the Atlantic Ocean. It is renowned for its unspoiled beauty, often drawing comparisons to the picturesque beaches of Algarve in Southern Portugal.
The natural characteristics of the beach are captivating. Enclosed between two cliffs, it boasts a tranquil setting with golden sands. The beach is also known for its significant tidal changes, which add to its unique charm. The surroundings of the beach are wild and natural, providing a stunning backdrop to the beach. The highest cliff, standing at about 40 meters, offers a panoramic view of the beach and the ocean, enhancing the overall appeal of the place.
However, the beach's beauty conceals a potential danger - strong underwater currents, particularly on the right side of the beach. These currents can pose a risk to swimmers. Despite this, they are often utilized by body-boarders. To ensure visitor safety, lifeguards are stationed at a lookout point and directly on the water's edge from 1 pm to 7 pm during the months of July and August. They mark the swimming area based on the intensity of currents and waves.
Plage du Donnant is a popular spot among surfers, who find the large waves challenging yet exhilarating. Surfing lessons are offered from April to the end of October by Ty School. The beach is also a great place to watch the sunset. Despite its popularity among surfers and body-boarders, the beach is not typically overcrowded, maintaining a sense of tranquility.
