Gola de la Llosa is a distinctive beach and wetland area located in the town of La Llosa, within the province of Castell贸n, Spain. This area straddles the southern part of the province of Castell贸n and the northern part of the province of Valencia, extending into the regions of La Plana Baja and Campo de Murviedro. The municipalities of Chilches, La Llosa, Almenara, Sagunto, Benavites, and Cuartell also share this area.
The beach is characterized by its pebbled surface, providing it with a unique natural charm. This tranquil setting is ideal for relaxation and leisurely walks. While the beach's pebbled surface enhances its natural appeal, visitors are advised to be careful when entering and exiting the water. The beach also provides a suitable environment for overnight camping in a camper.
The wetland part of Gola de la Llosa is a significant area for biodiversity, receiving freshwater from the Sierra de Espad谩n. It covers 1,550 hectares and is protected as a Microreserve of Flora and Fauna. It has been designated as a Site of Community Interest (LIC) and is part of the Red Natura 2000 network. Furthermore, it was declared a Ramsar site, an internationally important wetland, on November 17, 2017, covering an area of 1,473.9 hectares. This wetland is included in the Catalog of Wetland Areas of the Valencian Community and is classified under the group of coastal lagoons and marshes.
The area also provides two accessible hiking routes, suitable for both hikers and cyclists, offering a chance to explore and appreciate the region's natural beauty.
The beach and surrounding area have been the focus of significant investment by the Spanish government, with a project underway to construct a breakwater at La Gola. This project, the largest in the history of La Llosa beach with an investment of 7.8 million euros, separates La Llosa and Almenara. The breakwater's extension will facilitate the beach area's expansion and aid in stabilizing the coastal front of Almenara and La Llosa. An environmental impact study is also part of this project.
