Isola delle Correnti is a picturesque beach located 8 km from Pachino in the southernmost tip of Sicily, Italy. The beach is known for its unique geographical location where the Mediterranean Sea and the Ionian Sea meet. This makes it a distinctive spot as visitors have the rare opportunity to swim in two seas simultaneously. The area is named after an islet that stands in front of the mainland, which was once connected by a strip of land.
The beach is quite exposed to the wind, and its clear waters make it ideal for swimming. The natural beauty of the area is unspoiled, with few signs of human presence. There is a small, round-shaped island covering an area of approximately 10,000 square meters and reaching a maximum height of 4 meters above sea level. The island is connected to Portopalo by a narrow stone strip, and it is home to a picturesque lighthouse, an abandoned military structure, and a few houses that were once inhabited by the lighthouse keeper and his family.
Isola delle Correnti is divided into two sides: the east and the west. The east side houses the Guardian beach, while the west side is home to the Ponterio, Carratois, and Costa dell'amber beaches. The Costa dell'amber beach, in particular, boasts three sandy coves and is surrounded by two coastal marshes, Longarini and Cuba. These beaches are protected by dunes and can be accessed from both Pachino and Portopalo.
Despite the presence of a bridge that once provided access to the island, it is currently not in use. However, the journey to Isola delle Correnti is still considered worthwhile, attracting many visitors seeking a unique beach experience in Italy. The currents generated by the confluence of the two seas create ever-changing ripples and colors, adding to the charm of this beach, hence the name "Isola delle Correnti", which translates to 'Island of Currents'.
