Playa de la Ribera is a natural heritage beach located in the municipality of Gozón, in the Cabo Peñas region of Asturias, Spain. This coastal beach, known for its charming and serene atmosphere, is nestled between the old port of Luanco and the new marina facilities, connected by a promenade that spans the entire area. Despite its urban setting, the beach is not heavily crowded, even during the peak summer months.
The beach is characterized by its shell-like shape and sandy bed. Unique rocky outcrops known as Samarincha and Samarinchon are found on its eastern slope, which are remnants of authentic stone quarry sites. These areas, including the Samarincha which stands about 50 meters high, disappear during high tide as does the entire beach.
Playa de la Ribera, over the years, has been undergoing rehabilitation and has become a hub for various activities, including the unique 'Playa de Luanco' International Tennis Tournament, which is the only tournament in the world played on a sandy beach court.
The beach is equipped with parking facilities and surveillance equipment, ensuring safety and convenience for its visitors. However, due to the beach's tendency to disappear during high tide, bathers are recommended to visit the nearby Luanco Beach.
The beach is situated in the Central Asturias region, specifically in the Comarca del Cabo Peñas, the northernmost territory of Asturias known for its maritime tradition. Gozón, the municipality that houses Playa de la Ribera, is located in the northern part of Asturias and is bordered by the Cantabrian Sea to the north. The region is characterized by its gentle topography, cliffs, peaceful beaches, and small rivers, with the Cabo de Peñas being its most prominent feature.
For visitors looking to experience the beach, both pedestrian and vehicular access are available. Its moderate level of occupancy coupled with strong waves, and the presence of bars and terraces nearby, make it an ideal location for sunbathing and enjoying the coastal landscape. Despite the presence of algae when there are waves, the beach maintains a calm and serene atmosphere.
