Cala Malladeta

Cala Malladeta is an enchanting cove situated in the coastal municipality of La Vila Joiosa, in Alicante, Spain. The beach is known for its rocky landscape and crystal-clear waters, providing a tranquil setting for sunbathing and beach activities. It is located near several historical sites, including the Malladeta Sanctuary, an ancient Iberian sanctuary dating back to the 4th century BC. Although the sanctuary's remnants are no longer visible due to the presence of a 19th-century tower, the site still harbors remnants of the temple's rooms and terraces. The beach is also close to Villa Giacomina, a historicist building constructed in 1910 that combines various architectural styles. The villa was used during the Spanish Civil War and is currently undergoing restoration by the Vila Joiosa City Council. Near the villa, visitors can see the remains of a fenced well and a tower built in the late 19th century by psychiatrist Alfonso Esquerdo. Despite its rocky terrain, Cala Malladeta is equipped with a foot wash and a beach bar to facilitate visitor comfort. However, the stone beach can make access somewhat challenging, as the parquet flooring provided for access only extends partway to the beach. Parking at Cala Malladeta is also paid and can be quite challenging due to limited spaces. Cala Malladeta is generally safe, with lifeguards on duty and a green flag often flying to indicate safety. However, the cleanliness of the beach may vary, with the beach sometimes reported as being dirty. Despite these challenges, Cala Malladeta is not typically crowded, providing a peaceful retreat for visitors. However, it should be noted that the beach may be closed during the winter months. Furthermore, the beach is home to the Torreón Malladeta, a tower built in the late 19th century. This oval-shaped tower serves as a lookout point and is considered a local heritage site, adding to the historical and architectural significance of the area.
