Otzias Beach is a sandy stretch of shoreline located on the north side of the Greek island of Kea, about 11 kilometers away from the island's capital, Ioulida. It is known for its clear waters, natural shade, and picturesque environment, with trees bordering the area. The beach is part of a small settlement that features charming narrow paths that are ideal for leisurely strolls.
In terms of its natural characteristics, Otzias Beach stands out for its length, stretching over 700 meters, and its suitability for windsurfing. Unlike many other locations on Kea, Otzias Beach is not affected by the Meltemi summer winds, making it an ideal spot for windsurfing enthusiasts. However, the waters at many of the island's other beaches tend to be tranquil and not suitable for this particular activity.
Historical ruins on the site suggest that Otzias Beach was once a port during classical times. Visitors to the area also have the opportunity to explore nearby mines, located roughly a mile away en route to the church of Panagia Kastriani. This church is of significant importance, believed to have been chosen by a miracle, and is now part of a monastery that includes a newer church, cathedrals, and offers breathtaking views from its elevated position atop a rock.
As for amenities, Otzias Beach offers a variety of facilities, including several taverns and cafes. Nearby, in the village of Otzias, which is situated on the east side of the bay, there are additional establishments where visitors can enjoy meals and live music. Visitors can also find a selection of accommodation options in the vicinity, including hotels and stone houses that overlook the bay, adding to the scenic charm of the area.
Despite its popularity among beachgoers, Otzias Beach is large enough that it does not usually become overly crowded. The beach is divided into two sections: one that is organized with sun loungers and umbrellas, and a larger section that is free for all visitors. There is ample parking available for visitors, making the beach easily accessible. However, it's worth noting that the west side of the shore can sometimes have a significant amount of plastic garbage. Despite this, many visitors find Otzias Beach to be a pleasant and convenient stop during their visit to Kea.
