Playa de Portizuelo is a natural heritage site located in the municipality of Valdés, within the Vaqueira region of western Asturias, Spain. Known for its natural beauty, this semi-urban beach is characterized by its unique pebbles and quartzite rocks, which have been a source of inspiration to many artists. It is also adorned with stunning cliffs and vibrant green surroundings, adding to its picturesque charm.
The beach's geological features are particularly notable, especially the white quartzites from the upper term of the Serie de los Cabos overlaid with the dark-toned Pizarras de Luarca. These features are most visible at low tide, revealing unique rock formations such as the rock of Severo Ochoa, named after the scientist who reportedly drew inspiration here. Furthermore, two faults in the eastern sector of the beach leave a visible gap, marking a significant geosite.
Playa de Portizuelo is also known for its tranquil atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for relaxation, sunset viewing, and photography. Its remote location and difficult access contribute to its peaceful charm, as it tends to be less crowded compared to other beaches. However, visitors are advised to exercise caution due to the beach's specific characteristics and the potential dangers of the sea.
Reaching Playa de Portizuelo requires a car journey from the nearby town of Villar. Although there are no parking facilities available directly at the beach, it is accessible by road. It also features surveillance equipment for added security. Despite its remote location, the beach is part of the diverse tourism offerings in Valdés, a municipality known for its combination of sea, river, and mountain landscapes, as well as its rich cultural attractions.
The Vaqueira region, where the beach is located, is named after the nomadic social group vaqueiros de alzada, who have left a significant mark on the area. The municipality of Valdés covers a total area of 352 km2, bordered by the Cantabrian Sea to the north, and surrounded by other municipalities. Its capital is Luarca, fondly referred to as the "White Village of the Green Coast".
