Punta Della Mola, also known colloquially as la Pillirina, is a picturesque beach situated in the Maddalena Peninsula of Syracuse, Sicily. Nestled within the expansive and ecologically diverse Plemmirio Marine Protected Area, this beach is a popular tourist destination renowned for its natural beauty and historical significance.
The beach is unique for its natural coves, perfect for photography enthusiasts and those seeking breathtaking views of the sunset. The beach area is divided into two small and distinctive beaches, both of which boast crystal-clear waters. The marine life in the area is diverse, featuring a variety of fish, sea urchins, clams, and even squid, making it a popular spot for snorkeling. However, visitors are advised to exercise caution due to the presence of sharp stones in the water and are recommended to use swimming goggles or a diving mask for a safer and more enjoyable underwater experience.
Punta Della Mola is easily accessible by both boat and car, being only 10 km away from Syracuse. For those traveling by car, the route involves driving along via Elorina/SS115, followed by via Lido Sacramento and Traversa Sant'Agostino until reaching Varco 34 Plemmirio. A parking area is conveniently located about 800 meters from the beach. Alternatively, the beach can be reached via a quarter-mile hike down a quiet rural road.
Despite its popularity, Punta Della Mola is not typically overcrowded, providing a peaceful and serene environment for visitors. It is suggested that visitors bring a picnic to fully enjoy a day in this little slice of paradise. Additionally, it is one of the few places in Sicily where swimming is possible as early as May, due to the relatively warm water temperatures.
The beach is steeped in local folklore and history. The name "Pillirina" is derived from the Sicilian dialect, meaning "pilgrim". It is tied to a tragic local legend about a young girl named Pillirina, who fell in love with a sailor. When the sailor failed to meet her one night due to harsh sea conditions, Pillirina, believing she had been abandoned, took her own life. It is said that her ghost can still be seen by sailors during full moon nights. In addition to its rich folklore, Punta Della Mola holds historical significance as the site of the Athenians' first attack on Syracuse in 415 BC.
