Cala Bernardu

Cala Bernardu is a picturesque beach nestled in the northwestern region of Sardinia, Italy, specifically within the municipality of Bosa in the province of Oristano. The beach is located approximately 250 meters from the Capo Marrargiu promontory. The landscape is characterized by gray rocks and stones, along with untamed Mediterranean vegetation, offering a wild and untouched aesthetic. The beach is set between two rocky walls, a common characteristic seen in nearby coves such as Cala Fenuggiu and Cala Santa Maria. The surrounding sea displays an enchanting emerald green hue, with darker patches indicating deeper areas. This beach is part of the Site of Community Interest (SCI), a protected area named 'Hinterland and coastal area between Bosa, Capo Marargiu, and Porto Tangone'. This conservation area was established to preserve biodiversity through the protection of natural habitats, extending to the coastal areas of Bosa and Villanova Monteleone as well as other inland municipalities. It is a significant location for the nesting of the Griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus), providing an excellent spot for birdwatching. The beach itself is pebbly, set against the backdrop of dark volcanic rocks of effusive nature. The surrounding territory is dense with scrubland, predominantly composed of wild olive trees and mastic trees. The area also boasts an abundance of euphorbias and brooms. Near the sea, one can find several endemic species such as sea fennel (Crithmum maritimum), Evax rotundata, Helicrysum italicum, and others. Access to Cala Bernardu can be quite challenging as it lacks the usual amenities found on other beaches. The beach can be reached by private boat or through organized excursions from Bosa. However, approaching the coast by boat can be dangerous due to the presence of emerging or semi-submerged rocks. An alternative route is to reach the beach on foot, beginning from the SP49 Bosa-Alghero road. This route, however, is not recommended for inexperienced trekkers as it requires a steep hike through the dense Mediterranean scrub, taking at least an hour. Despite the challenging accessibility, the beach is less crowded, even during the high season, making it an ideal destination for those seeking solitude amidst natural beauty. The journey to Cala Bernardu, though demanding, is often considered worthwhile given the beach's untouched charm and breathtaking surroundings.
