Spiaggia di Sottobomba is a picturesque beach nestled in the vicinity of the town of Portoferraio on the northern part of the island of Elba. It is a part of the renowned "spiagge bianche" or white beaches of the region. The beach, stretching approximately 200 meters, is flanked by towering white cliffs reaching up to 40 meters in height. The beach's terrain is a mix of white eurite stones and hard rocks, which give the shoreline its distinctive charm and the waters their crystal clear appearance.
The beach is a haven for snorkeling enthusiasts, thanks to its shallow and rocky seabed. The white pebbles and clear waters create a beautiful tapestry of blue, turquoise, and aqua green shades, making it an ideal spot for couples seeking tranquility and natural beauty. However, due to its somewhat rugged terrain, visitors are advised to wear water shoes for safety and comfort, especially while swimming.
Despite its small size, Spiaggia di Sottobomba offers a few essential amenities. There is a small establishment on the beach providing rental services for umbrellas, sunbeds, pedal boats, and even water shoes. However, the beach is not very large and the sun doesn't cover the entire area, so it is advisable to arrive early to secure a good spot.
Reaching Spiaggia di Sottobomba requires a bit of effort. Visitors driving from Portoferraio can take Viale Einaudi near the town center. After passing a few other beaches, a sign indicates the access to the beach and a nearby parking area. From here, a staircase of about a hundred steps leads down to the beach.
For parking, options include a large paid parking area near the beach access and free parking near a nearby park. However, none of these parking spots are too close to the beach. Despite its challenging access and limited parking options, Spiaggia di Sottobomba remains a beloved beach, offering a blend of natural beauty and essential amenities. The beach is exposed to north winds, and it is recommended to visit on days with southern winds such as Scirocco, Mezzogiorno, and Libeccio.
