Spiaggia di Terranera is a unique beach located just outside the town of Porto Azzurro, on the island of Elba. Accessible from provincial road 26 towards Rio Marina, visitors can reach the beach by car, with two main access points available. One of these points is via the Reale beach, and the other through a side road leading to the Capo d'Arco area. After parking in a large, free, unpaved area, visitors can reach the beach through a short walk across a striking mineral landscape, offering a geologically intriguing route.
The beach itself is characterized by its black and shiny sand, a result of hematite and pyrite crystals from mining waste. The landscape is divided into three main zones, offering a variety of experiences for visitors. The first part, popular for swimming, is composed of fine, shiny sand. The central area features a cliff, suitable for diving or sunbathing. The final zone is known for the Terranera lake, a small basin formerly used for mineral extraction, now filled with green water. Small rocks emerging from the water at the end of the beach form a structure known as "the submarine", which is suitable for diving and provides a natural barrier for the final part of the beach.
Despite being exposed to open sea and eastern winds, Spiaggia di Terranera is not usually overcrowded, offering a serene experience for visitors. Its natural characteristics and geological features make it worth visiting, especially outside of the peak season. Furthermore, the beach is a great spot for snorkeling, with clear water and abundant sea life. However, the entrance to the water is stony and can be slippery, so water shoes are recommended for safety.
Although the beach is an appealing destination, it does not offer any nearby services. Visitors can find amenities at the nearby Reale beach. It's also worth noting that the path to the beach can be challenging, requiring some climbing, and the beach itself is not sandy but rather rocky, which may not be suitable for all visitors.
