Plage de la Potinière is a historically significant beach located in the picturesque town of Barneville-Carteret, specifically between the cap and the port of Carteret. It is part of the Côte des Isles and is protected from the Atlantic waves by the Channel Islands, making the beach a warm and inviting spot due to the influence of the Gulf Stream. The beach is recognized for its unique khaki-colored sand and vast sea, offering a serene and tranquil atmosphere, particularly at night due to the minimal light pollution.
The beach is distinguished by its horseshoe shape and its location at the foot of Cap de Carteret. The historical charm of the beach is preserved through the presence of blue and white beach cabins, which serve as a reminder of the beach's popularity during the early 20th century when sea bathing became a trend. The beach was a common meeting place for socialites, thus the term "Potinière," which translates to 'gossiping place.'
Plage de la Potinière is equipped with a range of amenities to ensure a comfortable visit for beachgoers. Parking is available along the beach, including two reserved spaces. For easy access, a paved path leads to the lifeguard station, and a sloping path provides convenient access to the water, with assistance available if required. Additionally, the beach features adapted toilets and showers, located 50 meters away, to cater to the needs of visitors.
During the peak months of July and August, two designated swimming areas are set up and supervised by lifeguards from 11 am to 7 pm daily to guarantee the safety of swimmers. However, the circulation of motorized and non-motorized watercraft is prohibited within these areas. Certain activities, including horseback riding, equestrian events, and fishing, are also restricted during the beach season from June 15th to September 15th. Moreover, dogs and certain equine breeds are not permitted on the beach from July 1st to September 1st each year.
Getting to Plage de la Potinière is straightforward. From the center of Barneville, visitors can follow the signs for the maritime station and the beach, bypassing the port. Despite being a popular spot for both locals and tourists, the beach is known for its friendly atmosphere and is typically not overly crowded, making it an ideal location for a relaxing beach getaway.
